Hidden Waterways, a project run by The Hive and funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Shropshire Council, set about publicising the hidden stories of the Shrewsbury to Newport Canal in artistic ways.

Mythstories co-ordinated five pottery workshops for the project, drawing in participants from our Home Ed community ‘Let’s Create At Home’. Every workshop booked up quickly, everyone got down and dirty with the clay and really enjoyed themselves thanks to workshop leader Stephanie Kelly.

In the first workshop, participants created their own canal scene.

The next week they created plaques showing canal-side scenes to be displayed along the length of the old canal.

Workshop 3’s plaques were inspired by a film of lengthsman Mal Edwards, MBE, who spent his working life on the canal. The artworks reflect his reminiscences and will help keep his stories alive.

Workshop 4 – Something for participants to take home – their own bowl inspired by the Castles and Roses decorative style found on the boats.

And participants in the final workshop focused on the wildlife to be found along the canal.
