Exhibit Of The Month 44

Gujarati Story Cloth

This beautiful story cloth from Gujurat is somewhat of an enigma.

The central figure is obviously Ganga riding on her Crocodile, but is it one story or many different ones that surround her? We, as yet, don't have a definitive answer. Can you help?

Ganesh appears in the top left, and Hanuman can be seen towards the top right. Separate episodes or stories seem to be surrounded by heavy decorative borders, but as yet we have been unable to decipher the depth of this traditional textile style. If you can explain the full story behind this story cloth please email info@mythstories.com.

The cloth is on loan to the museum from storyteller Helen East.
